VEDETEATRU Festival – 13th Edition 28 May – 4 June 2016

History:

Originally called “The Director’s... Head (The New Generation’s Gala)” - “Capul de... Regizor (Gala Noilor Generații)”, the festival was dedicated to supporting emerging artists and new directions in contemporary Romanian theatre. The first edition of the festival took place in 2003 and was meant to facilitate the analysis of current theatre practices in Romania from a directorial perspective alongside their aesthetic, conceptual, but also managerial trends as they emerged after 1990.

In 2007 the Festival was renamed as „VEDETEATRU – The Star’s Gala”. The festival concept shifted a bit, making more obvious the existent tendency to bring together emerging and renowned artists („stars”). The festival has continued to grow ever since, gaining more visibility on a national level. At the moment, we are looking at opening the festival to the international circuit.

The Festival structure:

  • The Official Selection (part of the competition)
  • Tomorrow’s Star (aimed at promoting young artists by showcasing graduation shows by BA and MA students from prestigious theatre universities in Romania)
  • Children’s Theatre
  • The Joy of Hearing
  • Conferences
  • Book launches

The festival has two juries – one formed by regular audience members, and the other formed by professional theatre theorists and practitioners. Each year the theme and focus of the festival changes – the festival „star” can be the director and her work, the scenographer, the playwright, the actor etc.
