The “George Ciprian” Theatre Buzău was established in 1995 at playwright Paul Ioachim’s initiative, who also became its first director. It is the first project theatre in Romania, which means that only the administrative and technical staff are permanently hired, while artists are contracted on a project basis.
The first production of the Theatre premiered on the 5th of April 1996 – “The Man with the Nag” by George Ciprian, directed by Tudor Mărăscu, scenography by Puiu Antemir. The cast was a mix of renowned and emerging actors: Mircea Diaconu, Sebastian Papaiani, Emil Hossu, Diana Lupescu, Ion Siminie, Geo Costiniu, Adriana Trandafir, Ion Pavlescu, Radu Panamarenco and Ion Batinaş.

Some of the greatest Romanian actors have performed on the Buzău stage: Irina Petrescu, Mariana Mihuţ, Victor Rebengiuc, Mircea Diaconu, Maia Morgenstern, Marcel Iureş, Mircea Albulescu, Valeria Seciu, Dorina Lazăr, Marian Râlea, Alexandru Repan, Emil Hossu, Olga Tudorache, Ion Caramitru, Răzvan Vasilescu, Ion Besoiu, Dan Puric, Catrinel Dumitrescu, Virgil Ogăşanu, Sebastian Papaiani, Diana Lupescu, Marius Bodochi etc.
Our festival juries and theatre conferences have brought together prestigious Romanian theatre critics and theorists, such as Octavian Saiu, Florica Ichim, Alice Georgescu, Marina Constantinescu, Mircea Morariu, Ludmila Patlanjoglu, Ion Parhon or Maria Sârbu, as well as renowned theatre managers and festival directors like Emil Boroghină, Marina Constantinescu, Constantin Chiriac, Alice Georgescu, Aura Corbeanu, Mircea Morariu or Călin Mocanu.
